About the Program

The pediatric Otolaryngology (ORL) fellowship program at King Abdulaziz University Hospital

The pediatric Otolaryngology (ORL) fellowship program at King Abdulaziz University Hospital was established in 2013 under the governance of Saudi Council for Health Speciality (SCFHS). The fellowship is a two year program with exposure to all pediatric ORL specialized cases including open airway reconstruction, congenital nasal anomalies, head & neck, and Otology including cochlear implant and implantable bone conduction systems. We fulfill the case log requirements set by the American council for graduate medical education (ACGME).

The program consist of 20 months or specialized Pediatric ORL Blocks, 2 months of research block, and 2 months of vacation. It is mandatory for the fellow to conduct research that is suitable for publication. The fellow is encouraged to present nationally and internationally his/her scholarly work.

The aim of the program is to graduate Pediatric otolaryngologists specialize in the medical and surgical management of neonates, infants, and children particularly those with complex Otolaryngologic problems and significant co-morbidities, generally cared for in tertiary care pediatric institutions.

Currently we have 4 expert pediatric ORL trainers with who have been trained by the some of the best centres worldwide with diverse expertise.

So far we have graduated seven Ped ORL working at institutions across the Kingdom.

Application Requirements: Approved Medical school graduate, Board Certified in OTL-HNS, letter of release and sponsorship as a full time fellow for duration of training, CV, 2 reference letters from consultants the candidate worked with for a minimum of 6 months, pass admission exam and/or interview.

Fellowship Start Date: 1st of January.

About the program

Operative experience: Highlights of our surgical training include a focus on Endoscopic and Open Airway reconstruction, Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Reinnervation, Congenital Head and Neck Tumors, Velopharyngeal Insufficiency Surgery.

Clinical experience: Pediatric Otolaryngology Clinics, Weekly Journal Club, Aerodigestive Multidisciplinary Clinic (in progress).

Research: Required, complete at least two peer reviewed publications during training.

About the Program

The Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship Program is a specialized 2-year program established in 2022. Focused on advanced training in pediatric otolaryngology, the program covers a comprehensive range of ear, nose, and throat (ENT) conditions in children. With a capacity for 2 fellows (intake of 1 fellow every year), the program ensures a personalized and focused learning experience. The two-year duration allows fellows to deepen their expertise in areas such as pediatric airway disorders, pediatric otology (including cochlear and bone conduction device implantation) congenital head and neck anomalies, and advanced pediatric ENT surgical procedures. Graduates from this program are well-prepared to contribute to the field of pediatric otolaryngology, providing specialized and comprehensive care to children with ENT-related conditions.
